If your cat does happen to become pregnant, you will need to have a quiet area where she can keep your kittens. The ideal place would be in a warm basement or even a large dog crate. The thing about cats is that they will take their kittens wherever they want them to be. If you want to keep them confined, you will need something with a door.

The mother will need to come out and exercise, eat and use the litter box, but will want to go back to her kittens. The mother cat that does not nurse her kittens will need some encouragement or you will have to feed the kittens yourself.

One example of a mother cat wanting to have her kittens where she chooses is a story I still find amazing. The mother cat was in the basement with food, water and the litter box. She had a dog crate for her and the kittens, but she was a sharing cat and wanted her kittens upstairs behind the couch.

The owner would take the kittens back downstairs and place the kittens in the crate, but never shut the door. The mother would bring the kittens back upstairs when no one was looking. It was the funniest thing to see. The mother wanted to be around people so she brought the kittens upstairs so she could take care of them.

You have to be strict with cats, but they usually do win in the end. You just need to make sure you work with the mother to litter train the kittens and everything does work out. The kittens never urinated in the house, they learned to use the litter box down in the basement and eat their food down there as well. When they were done doing what they needed to do, they would climb back up the stairs and play upstairs.
