Cats have different ways of communicating. They are very vocal, but also communicate with their tails. Understanding what the tail movements mean is very important to understand your cat. Here are twelve movements of the tail and what they mean.

1)      Tail is arches and thick: this is a defensive stance and the cat can strike if provoked. The tail looks big because the hair bushes out.

2)      Tail is straight up in the air and thick: The cat is in an aggressive mood and will attack.

3)      Tail is twitching at the tip: This means they are irritated, but only a little bit. If the twitching starts going faster, chance are they are going to swipe at you with a paw.

4)      Tail straight up and quivering: This is a sign the cat is happy to see you. They also do this when spraying. It is a way of saying, “Here I am.”

5)      Tail is off to one side: The cat is inviting a sexual encounter from a male.

6)      Tail fluffed out and hanging low: the cay is scared.

7)      Tail wagging rapidly back and forth: The cat is ready to attack.

8)       Tail between the legs: This is very uncommon, but means the cat id defeated.

9)      Tail curved down but up at the tip: The cat is peaceful and content.

10)  Tail curved softly and raised: Something is catching their attention.

11)  Tail straight up with a curve at the tip: The cat is greeting you and is in a friendly mood.

12)  Tail is straight up with the tip pointed outward: The cat is happy to see you and there is no reservation at all.
