A Mother Cat Had Her Kittens Under Our Porch

Many feral cats will seek out a place that is safe to hide her kittens from predators. If you find yourself in this situation, you can leave her there or call the local Humane Society to try to trap the mother. They can then catch the kittens. If you leave her there, chances are as soon as the kittens are old enough, she will leave them to fend for themselves. They will wander around your yard for some time before they venture out to other areas.

If your cat does happen to become pregnant, you will need to have a quiet area where she can keep your kittens. The ideal place would be in a warm basement or even a large dog crate. The thing about cats is that they will take their kittens wherever they want them to be. If you want to keep them confined, you will need something with a door.

The mother will need to come out and exercise, eat and use the litter box, but will want to go back to her kittens. The mother cat that does not nurse her kittens will need some encouragement or you will have to feed the kittens yourself.

During a summer that I was blessed with two fertile female felines and nineteen kittens, I discovered Nutro Kitten as one of the options at my local Petsmart.Feeding cats–particularly kittens–a higher priced quality dry cat food will cut down on the odor from the litter box. I found out by experience.

I had given the kittens Friskies dry food, and the reduction in odor was definitely noticeable when the food change worked its way through the little ones system’s. The stuff still stinks, but not quite so intensely. The back of the cat food bag says “Guaranteed to Reduce Litter Box Odor”–”Complete Satisfaction or Your Money Back”. There is nothing cuter than a kitten. But, bringing a new kitten home as a pet can be traumatic. Cats do not appreciate change. Keeping a few things in mind, you can make the transition bearable for your new friend.

Kittens can be easily overwhelmed because they have not experienced much of the world yet. Your new kitty may be terrified when you first bring him home. If you let him go in the house, most likely he will hide. When I brought home my two kittens, I couldn’t find them for several hours. Finally, my husband spotted them behind the furnace. They found the smallest place they could squeeze their little bodies, because that made them feel safe.

Her abdomen getting bigger was not the first sign. It was the constant hunger. Any time I would get near the food bowl she would mew for more. She would ask for treats more and seem to just appear at the smell of food at the supper table.
