The news site, speroforum.com reported on the euthanasia practices of PETA recently. PETA stands for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and they are known for their radical stance on animal rights issues. They absolutely reject any human use of animals including for food and medical testing.

An official report from PETA showed that they euthanized 97% of the animals they took in for adoption in 2006. They took in 3,061 animals and killed 2,981. According to the Spero news article, other humane societies have an average euthanasia rate of 34.7%.

So what gives? Is PETA hypocritical or do they have a good explanation for this? I don’t know. Their website has no response to this report or explanation. In my opinion, while PETA may do worthwhile things for animals, they are also dangerous to the animal rights cause. They are radical and divisive. There are many people who care about animals, but who cannot agree to all of PETA’s drastic ideals. Because they make the news so often, they get more donations than other, very worthy animal causes.

My advice to those wanting to volunteer time or money to help their furry friends is to find a local shelter to help. I donate to the no-kill shelter that rescued my precious kitties. Since they never euthanize, they need all the help they can get.
