Many new parents will tell you that they have no worries about handling their cats and then the baby. This is true, but some will tell you that you should wash your hands before handling the baby after touching the cats. The truth is that the cats live in the same home with the baby and eventually the two are going to meet and touch. So what is the big deal about washing your hands after touching a cat and before you touch the baby?
There is some concern for the baby as far as allergies. You will not know if the baby has an allergy to a cat right away. By washing your hands, you will not transmit cat salvia to the baby. Most people or children that are allergic to cats are allergic to the salvia and not the cat itself. In this case, it makes sense to wash your hands between handling both.
If you are thinking it is for cleanliness, it is not going to hurt if you do not watch your hands. I guess it is just a matter of choice.
