It’s an important question these days.  As veterinary technology races into the future, procedures and surgeries for you cat become more expensive.  Vets are more capable of saving and fixing your beloved kitty, but you will have to pay.  We all dread the possibility of being asked to choose between our pet’s life and a $2,000 bill.  Pet insurance can make that decision much easier.

Employers are beginning to offer pet insurance as a fringe benefit to employees.  According to an article at courant.com, corporate accounts at Veterinary Pet Insurance, the largest pet insurer in the U.S., have increased from 15 to 1600 in the last six years.  Payment for the insurance comes only from the employee, so the employer has no cost in offering the insurance.  Employees receive a discount by using a corporate account, and everybody wins.

You can certainly buy pet insurance on your own.  You will be in the minority.  Currently, only 2% of pets in the U.S. are insured.  That number is expected to grow to 10% in the next ten years.

Even if you have to pay for pet insurance without an employer’s discount, or with large deductibles, the benefits can really be worth it.  Especially if your cat is an outdoor cat, pet insurance could really make your life easier.
