Recently a friend of mine was diagnosed with cat scratch fever. What had happened was he was dating a woman who had a grown cat that like to sleep under the bed at night. One night my friend got out of bed in the middle of the night and scared the cat, which took off running. As the cat ran across his foot, the back claw scratched his foot. No big deal he had a little scratch and was fine.
The next day he went to worked and came down with the flu. He went home and crawled into bed. As the day went on, he became sicker and thought he was going to die. The next day, he was so sick he could not even get out of bed. An ambulance was called and he was taken to the hospital where doctors thought he had the flu as well. They ran some tests and asked a lot of questions before finding out what was wrong with him.
He had cat scratch fever. Although it is rare, cat scratch fever is real. If left untreated, a person can die. If you have flu like symptoms that progressively get worst, you should see a doctor if you have been scratched by a cat. The scratch does not even have to be deep or painful. Cat scratch fever is something you should watch for in children and adults.
