Overweight or obesity problems can also be a dilemma with cats. Veterinarians can determine if your cat is overweight. Just like humans, cat needs to exercise at a regular basis to lose weight. Cat optimum body weight can be observed at one year of age but it is not true that cats become severely obese at only one year. These are the facts.

Cats should not become overweight to prevent lipidosis- the condition in which the liver becomes fatty. Proper diet should be observed to maintain their weight avoiding necessary problems in the future. This is the best care to help cats with over 50 percent weight than the average optimum weight to reduce unnecessary mass or heaviness.

Guidelines on how to give a proper diet on overweight cats:

1. Always consult your veterinarian before incorporating proper diets on overweight cats.

2. Let the veterinarian determine the estimated number of pounds the cat should lose. This is solved by subtracting the optimum weight from total amount of cat’s obesity weight.

3. Weight reduction formula should be strictly given to the cat.

4. Give dry foods containing fats less than ten percent and contains over fifteen percent fiber.

5. Buy cat foods having an authorized seal from AFT or Animal Feeding Trials or AAFCO or Association of American Feeding Control Officials.

6. Every cat meal must be provided with weight reduction foods. Appropriate dosage of food must be given twice or four times a day.

7. Minimize amount of food fed to your cat if it can obtain extra food somewhere else such as catching small animals or mice.

8. Monitor the weight of the cat every two weeks through weighing.

9. Play with the cat to get the needed exercise to lose weight. A lazy cat will utilize their body energy burning excess fats.

There is no available dietary plans ideal for every cat. Giving a balanced diet to your cat can help in maintaining its health and proper satisfaction to their appetite.

1. Make sure that you select a highly regarded cat food brand. Ask recommendations from your veterinarian.

2. Feed your cat either with dry and wet foods to eat. You can keep the cat teeth clean by feeding dry foods. Read the labels to know if the level of nutrients is suitable to the life stage of your cat. A balance cat food must contain 19 to 22 percents fats or 34 to 38 percent proteins.

3. Remember that cats are nibblers or snackers who likes to munch on small quantity of dry foods all through the day.

4. Learn that cats having problems on digestion needs foods higher in fiber contents. Consult a veterinarian for the appropriate food.

5. Cats with ages ranging from eight to ten years have lesser abilities to taste, smell, chew or digest. Feed older cats with highly palatable or digestible foods.

6. Give the cats a measured small quantity of canned foods twice a day leaving the dry foods for their in between snacks all through the day. Never give the cat dog food because they have different contents.

Proper nutrition ensures that cats stay healthy preventing obesity leading to formation of kidney and heart diseases. Obesity also contributes to pre-mature aging and death. Always ask the veterinary’s advice ensuring every thing is done properly or read helpful reviews of other cat owners.
