Feral cats are hard to socialize because they have no human contact. They are born and raised in the wild and fend for themselves. Humans are predators to the feral cat. If you have a chance to provide a home for a feral kitten, you have a chance of having a beautiful, loving and faithful companion. Kittens can be cuddled and they will slowly begin to trust a human. They may only trust you, but they will become affectionate.
Older feral cats are a little harder to change. They have been wild for so long that they will not adapt to humans quickly. You can take a feral cat and help them adjust to living with humans. It takes some time, but placing them in a crate with a litter box and food is a way to start. As you feed the cat and talk softly to it, it will slowly start to accept you.
It is going to take weeks before the cat warms up to you, but constant feeding and a few treats and toys will help. As you are warming the cat up, you can start offering your hand for smell. As they become accustom to your smell and sense that you will not harm them, you can hold them for a few minutes a few times a day.
If you are trying to tame a feral cat, you should contact your local humane society for more information.
