Bengal cats are descendants of Asian Leopard Cat having domestic breeds including Egyptian Mau, Abyssinan, Burmese and American Shorthair. Bengal is a wild cat having a built ranging from medium to large, smooth and well muscled having a stylish hindquarters little higher than shoulders.
Bengal cat has a dense, silky, soft, short hair which are patterned with marbled or spots random with acceptable color variations. The coat sometimes appeared as sprinkled glitters.
If Bengal cats are properly bred, they can become active, affectionate and intelligent companions. They love water and can splash on the sink or join a shower with you. They have the combination of exotic look and feel similar to small wild cats living in the forests and the domestic cat loving temperament and dependability.
Like any other pets, Bengal cats needs proper care to ensure that they stay healthy. They are tough cats with few requirements on their special care regarding food, health care, shelter and affection.
1. Consult a veterinarian regarding feeding Bengal cat especially for kittens younger that six weeks.
2. Kittens with age lower than six months must be given canned foods appropriate for them 3 to 4 times per day. If it reaches 6 to 8 months old, reduce feeding routine to 2 times per day.
3. Fresh water and dried kitten food should always be available.
4. If the cat reaches one year old, ¼ adult food combined with ¾ kitten food should be given gradually increasing the adult food percentage after 5 or 10 days.
5. Cats like food variations so feed them with dry or wet foods.
6. Avoid feeding your cat with milk because it causes diarrhea.
7. Female Bengal cats can be neutered at ages 4-6 months old while males at ages 6-7 months old. They reproduce early at four months old and easily get pregnant while currently nursing their litters.
8. Always put identification tag on your cat containing information such as your phone number or address.
9. Clean and remove litter’s wastes everyday. Clean the litter everyday.
Remember that cat are happy to stay indoors especially if given with toys, window shelves to play on, or provided with posts to scratch on. Companion pets should get full attentions to keep them indoors. Training your cats how to do a harness or leash walks could also be done.
Use toys instead of your hands for safety purposes when playing with your cats encouraging aggressiveness and biting techniques. If ever they have bitten your hands, blow your cat’s eyes before taking your hands away.
The safety precautions of your Bengal cats should be well monitored.
1. Never allow your cat to stay alone outside because of numerous dangers that might be encountered such as disease, fights, traffic hypothermia, getting lost, might get stolen or trap.
2. Keep small items such as needles, buttons, tinsel and a shoelace out of the cat reach to avoid risks of swallowing.
3. Cleaning household chemicals and medications should be kept properly away from cat to avoid curiosity.
4. Conceal electrical wirings and keep the toilet cover down.
5. Never allow overeating. Kitten’s uneaten food should be taken away after ten minutes.
Rewarding your Bengal cats is good especially when they display good behavior. Never punish your cats for bad behavior because it can cause aloofness. Squirt them with water or make a loud noise for stopping their bad behavior.
